Strain-induced metal–semiconductor transition observed in atomic carbon chains

چکیده
Carbyne, the sp(1)-hybridized phase of carbon, is still a missing link in the family of carbon allotropes. While the bulk phases of carbyne remain elusive, the elementary constituents, that is, linear chains of carbon atoms, have already been observed using the electron microscope. Isolated atomic chains are highly interesting one-dimensional conductors that have stimulated considerable theoretical work. Experimental information, however, is still very limited. Here we show electrical measurements and first-principles transport calculations on monoatomic carbon chains. When the 1D system is under strain, the chains are semiconducting corresponding to the polyyne structure with alternating bond lengths. Conversely, when the chain is unstrained, the ohmic behaviour of metallic cumulene with uniform bond lengths is observed. This confirms the recent prediction of a metal-insulator transition that is induced by strain. The key role of the contacting leads explains the rectifying behaviour measured in monoatomic carbon chains in a nonsymmetric contact configuration.

In this paper, the uniaxial strain effect on the electronic properties of (6,6) finite armchair carbon nanotube was investigated by using the Green function technique and Landure-Buttiker formula. We present a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic properties of transition-metal TM atomic chains adsorbed on the zigzag single-wall carbon nanotubes SWNTs . We considered the adsorption on the external and internal wall of SWNT and examined the effect of the TM coverage and geometry on the binding energy and the spin polarization at the Fermi level. All those adsorbed chains studied...

We investigate the electronic structure of carbon and nitrogen impurities, which are commonly incorporated during atomic-layer deposition of high-j oxides such as Al2O3 and HfO2. The impact on metal-oxide-semiconductor devices is assessed by examining formation energies, transition levels, and band alignment between the oxide and semiconductors such as GaN, Si, and III-As. Carbon introduces cha...

We study the equilibrium geometry and electronic structure of thin films of layered gray arsenic using ab initio density functional theory. In contrast to bulk gray As that is semimetallic, thin films display a significant band gap that depends sensitively on the number of layers, in-layer strain, layer stacking, and interlayer spacing. We find that metallic character can be introduced by incre...
